Rectangular console table with extended width and rounded corners standing on four rectangular tapering legs, front with a frieze drawer accompanied by two trompe l’oeil-drawers and gilt bronze triglyph applications on the sides. The desserte is topped by a white marble top and partially surrounded by a pierced bronze gallery. In the lower part of the furniture two intermediate shelves or stretchers, the back being lined with a pierced bronze gallery, the front decorated with bronze banding. Very fine marquetry playing with the contrast of dark and light wood, drawer and panel with classical ring handles.
The console or so-called desserte is shows great resemblance to a desserte made and stamped by Parisian ebenist Jean-André Artzt (1750-1816): Artzt who was born in Frankfurt/Main as the son of a cabinetmaker, went to Paris at a now unknown date, where he received his master’s degree in 1785, and must have worked there for some time in the rue de Faubourg Saint Antoine. After 1803, his trace is lost. Stamped pieces by this ebenist are relatively rare and were made in the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. Marquetry “au papillon” in rectangular cartouche framing are typical of this furniture.
