A gilt bronze figure of a young female wearing an ancient Greek style peplum standing on a round faceted crystal glass base with a gilt bronze plinth. The figure is holding a wreath of flowers in one hand while the other one is supporting the crystal glass bowl which she is carrying on her head. The crystal glass bowl is of oval and ten-lobed shape, each lobe being decorated with a diamond cut.
The combination of gilt bronze and crystal glass as seen here was a special feature of the manufacturer L’Escalier de Cristal, Paris: The luxury store of the Maison L’Escalier de Cristal was stablished in 1802 by Mme. Désarnaud and it supplied clocks, lamps and other objets d’art to the ruling families of Europe. The business was located in the Palais Royal, a centre of excellence for the high quality jewellers, silversmiths and manufacturers of objets de vertu, for which Paris was renowned. The firm specialised in objects of great technical and aesthetic innovation, many composed entirely of crystal and gilt bronze. For the realization of its models, Escalier de Cristal most often called upon Parisian artists specializing in a specific technical field.
