Excellent small Louis XVI period table, so-called “table chiffoniere”, made ca. 1775 in Eastern France, probably Strasburg:
A rectangular side table standing on square tapering feet with trompe l’oeil fluting marquetry and gilt bronze sabots consisting of two front drawers, which are topped by a white marble plate. Between the legs at the lower part of the table a stretcher with elaborate trompe l’oeil cube pattern marquetry. The front of the drawers with marquetry “en ailes de papillon” within a fine rectangular banding which is framed by kingswood veneer; the two sides of the table with the same kind of decoration only using the veneer in the opposite way. Drawers with large Louis XVI circular ring handles and keyhole surrounds of gilt bronze.
The use of walnut for the construction of the table as well as the excellently executed marquetry combing geometrical patterns such trompe l’oeil fluting, cube pattern and banded veneer panels lead to a workshop located in Eastern France, probably Strasburg.
