Excellent 18th Century Pair of Transition Louis XVI Gilt Bronze Candlesticks “à la Grec”
A baluster-shaped and fluted stem resting on a high domed circular base with laurel leaf and pearl frieze. The stem is adorned with heavy sculptural laurel swags, finding their echo in the laurel frieze of the topping nodus. A vase-shaped godroned and fluted nozzle, drip-pans with pearl rim.
The high quality of the very elaborate chasing and gilding of the pair of Transition period/Louis XVI early neoclassical candlesticks suggests that it was manufactured a Parisian workshop of high craftmanship.
The design of the pair relates to the preliminary drawings of Parisian designers of the second third of the 18th century, including Jean-François Forty, Jean-Louis Prieur (1759-1795), and Jean-Charles Delafosse (1734-1791).
