19th Century French Transition/Louis XVI Marquetry Gilt Bronze Commode Bureau
A Transitional /Louis XVI style breakfront commode or sauteuse with canted corners standing on high tapering cabriole legs and holding two frieze drawers. Between the two front legs an apron with neoclassical vase motif gilt-bronze mount. Front and sides with elaborate marquetry of rectangular burl wood cartouches framed with fine strapwork. When pulling out the upper frieze drawer, the commode turns into a writing desk by pressing a button at the right top of the drawer: the inner part of the drawer turns into a leather lined writing plate, also revealing four small drawers and one compartment for documents, papers and all kinds of stationery. Feet, Corners, and drawers with elaborate Louis XVI style gilt bronze mounts. The commode bureau is topped by an excellent Brêch d’Alep marble plate following the outline of the commode.
Stunning and very attractive French late 19th century commode or chest of drawers with a hidden additional writing function of excellent quality, which makes it a perfect conversation piece.
