A small rectangular commode with slightly curved front and sides and kneeled angles standing on four cabriole legs. The commode holds three lockable drawers and is topped by a grey and white mottled and eared marble top which follows the shape of the commode. Carcass of oak, the front, drawers and both sides decorated with fine mirrorerd and contrasting marquetry within green-colored banding. The front feet and corners with excellently chased and gilt Louis XV bronze decoration, apron and keyholes with Régence style gilt bronze mounts. Stamped “J.C.ELLAUME/JME”.
Rare and beautifully proportioned small Louis XV commode in excellent condition by the famous cabinet-maker Jean-Charles Ellaume:
Although the dates of his birth and death are unrecorded it is known that Jean-Charles Ellaume was received as a maître-ébéniste in 1754 and worked for more than 30 years from his Parisian workshop in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. His work was of the finest quality, ornamented with intricate veneers and superb gilt bronze mounts. His furniture is included in the collections of the Chateau de Morlanne, and Vendeuvre, the Chateau Royal de Wawel, Krakow, and the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Bernay.
