Patinated bronze sculpture of youthful Diana, goddess of the Hunt on a rectangular plinth clad in a short peplum and caught in the moment of running; her right arm reaches backwards to the quiver at her back in order to pull out an arrow. Diana is accompanied by a running deer at her left side. Seperate stepped base made of red marble. Beautifully cast and patinated sculpture of attractive size.
The sculpture is a copy of the Classical Roman marble sculpture of Diana, so-called “Diana of Versailles”, which is now located at the Louvre/Paris, Galerie des Caryatides; The marble statue itself is a Roman copy (1st or 2nd century AD) of a lost Greek bronze original attributed to Leochares, c. 325 BC and was given by Pope Paul IV to Henry II of France in 1556 who placed it in the Jardin de la Reine of Chateau Fontainebleau. In 1602, Henri IV removed it to the Palais du Louvre, where the Diana was installed in a gallery specially designed to receive it, the Salle des Antiques (now the Salle des Caryatides).
