Large 18th Century French Louis XVI Neoclassical Marquetry Commode or Chest of Drawers à la Grècque
A large Louis XVI gilt bronze mounted marquetry break front commode or chest of drawers, with a shaped moulded mottled grey marble top above two frieze drawers laid out in trompe l’oeil manner looking like one frieze drawer with a dummy centered keyhole. The circular handles in shape of a ring within a rosette mount which resemble those of the two long drawers of breakfront underneath except for the fact that ring and mount are worked as one piece in order to hide the keyholes of the small drawers and preserve the impression of three large identically marqueted drawers. The two long drawers of break-front form with strapwork panels and centered functional keyholes, with a shaped apron set with a symmetrical gilt bronze apron mount of a neoclassical vase motif and foliage. On square tapering legs with gilt bronze sabots. The sides and legs with trompe l’oeil fluting marquetry and expressive gilt bronze lion’s head mounts bearing rings.
