Rising from circular Rouge Griotte marble bases, the patinated-bronze figures of two Bacchantic females inspired Models by Claude Michel dit Clodion. Each of the female figures holds a toursade cornucopia issuing a stem decorated with acanthus leaves and fruit, terminating in a vase-shaped bobeche covered by aremovable stylised flame. The stembeing surrounded by six scrolled branches with acanthus leave and rooster head decoration, holding similar vase-shaped bobeches with garland friezes.
The inspiration for this pair of candelabra can be found in the models Claude Michel, known as Clodion (1738-1814). Clodion was a French sculptor in the Rococo style, especially noted for his works in marble and terracotta. His skill of combining and intertwining a variety of elements in a tight composition married with a high degree of finish and detail lead to success: he became highly sought after by members of the elite European nobility and royalty. Clodion continued to work until his death in 1814.
