A Louis XVI gilt bronze mounted kingwood and amaranth break front commode or chest of drawers, with a shaped moulded mottled grey marble top above two frieze drawers (laid out as if one frieze drawer with even a divided key surround) above two long drawers of break-front form inlaid sans traverse with strapwork panels, with a shaped apron set with a symmetrical gilt bronze apron mount of foliage. On square tapering legs with gilt bronze sabots. The commode has been stamped F.C.F. referring to F.C. Franc received master 1756. F.C. Franc made furniture during the Louis XV period as well as the Louis XVI period. His later work is characterised by the use of kingwood veneer and strapwork panels with corners designed ‘a` la Grecque’ – like our commode.
A classical design for the period displaying a Fine elegance.
