The case is oak, with veneers, the sides and the top with marquetry “à la reine”. The table ist of octogonal shape with a small wooden gallery to the top. The corners of the tables are decorated with ornamental Louis XVI gilt bronze mounts, where as the sabots of the feet and the handles of the drawers still show the pittoresque Louis XV style. In the lower part of the tables between the legs a wooden stretcher with banding.
Between about 1750 and 1800 French cabinetmakers developed many designs for delicate, small writing tables for use by women. This type of furniture proved to be popular over centuries as we can see beautifully in this pair of late 19th /early 20th century side tables or Lady’s writing tables.
