Circular molded frame made of gilt and partially ebonized wood, decorated with rope-like elements with acanthus-leaf-joints, and fine floral banding. Original convex mirror glass with parts of corrosion due to age. The back with old storage label: “Allen’s Depository Colwyn Bay/Greenhalgh, H 8002”, indicating that the mirror once belonged to a family named Greenhalgh which had been located in Colwyn Bay, a seaside resort at the north coast of Wales overlooking the Irish Sea.
This kind of wall mirror is called Butler’s Mirror, because the curved glass allowed servants to keep an eye on the proceedings in the dining room while keeping a respectful distance.
Elegant convex Georgian Butler’s mirror with beautifully aged patina.
