We are happy to introduce you to a beautiful and rare pair of wall mirrors made in Italy in the 1790ies. The mirror frames, still holding the original mirror plates, are made of walnut, the decoration is made of carved, gilded wood.
The pair of mirrors is a beautiful example of the Neoclassical Style of the 2nd half of the 18th century, that was inspired by the decorations found in the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and made popular amongst others by the writings of J.J.Winckelmann: the simple, beautifully proportioned frame is surmounted by a cresting consisting of a central vase flanked by two birds picking on the foliage. Vase and birds are supported by a very intricate and interwoven balustrade. The lower part of the mirrors are decorated by neoclassical style flower garlands.
The dark walnut wood consisting of a wonderfully aged patina beautifully contrasts the giltwood elements and underlines the rigor of the classical style, but at the same time exudes a wonderful warmth.
