THIS beautiful Régence/Louis XV style bureau plat works perfectly for the Christmas season: what a wonderful place to write your Christmas cards, to wrap the Christmas presents for your loved ones and to get important matters off the ground before the end of the year:
manufactured in France during the reign of Napoleon III ca. 1860, this writing desk was inspired by famous bureau plats of the 18th century, such as the prominent “bureau de Choiseul”, made by one of the most important equals of his time, Jacques Dubois (1694-1763), which is now part of the collection of the Louvre in Paris: its serpentine shape, its proportions and its exuberant gilt bronze mounts, which mark a transition between the Régence and later rocaille forms, are reflected in our model.
Raised on cabriole legs the oak carcase with an elegant, warm-toned marquetry consists of three shaped drawers on the front: due to matching blind drawers on the back the bureau plat can be placed easily in the center of a room. The rich, elaborately chiseled bronze mounts with flower and rocaille forms add to the liveliness of the marquetry and the charisma of the bureau plat. The original dark brown leather top with its wonderfully aged patina offers a very pleasant writing and working pad.
